Breeder Gases 93 Dogs in Makeshift Gas Chamber

URGENT PLEA FOR SIGNATURES!!!

David Yoder must be prosecuted for this horrific act of animal abuse. Just to lose his kennel license is NOT enough.

Please take time to read, sign, and pass on to others.

Thank you.
Jo Ann

David and Barbara Yoder of Black Diamond Acres kennel in Seneca County, New York, decided to "depopulate" their kennel. David Yoder created a makeshift gas chamber out of a wooden whelping box (a wooden box usually used as a safe place for birthing dogs) retrofitted with a metal door and a three-horsepower engine. Filling the box with five or six dogs at a time, he pumped in carbon monoxide, walked away so he wouldn't get a headache, then came back a few minutes later to see if the dogs were dead. He repeated this cruel process over and over again, killing a total of 78 dogs and 15 puppies.

Following the massacre, the USDA told the Yoders that euthanasia needs to be performed by a vet, and the kennel's license was cancelled. It's too little, too late. The Yoders need to be prosecuted for animal cruelty.

Tell the Seneca County District Attorney to prosecute the Yoders to full extent of the law.

The Presidential Pooch

Post from Mary O'Conner-Shaver of ColumbusTopDogs.com...

Dear Companion Pet Lovers ~

The presidential pooch is set to make his public debut Tuesday, according to TMZ.com. The pet apparently comes with quite the Democratic pedigree.

The Obamas have settled on a Portuguese water dog from a Texas breeder - the same breeder and doggie lineage as Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy's pets, the entertainment news service said.

The six month old puppy, Charlie, was originally sold to someone else, and then returned to the breeder. The dog will be "re-homed" with the Obamas and presented to the first family by the Kennedys. The "re-homing" avoids any issues with guidelines on presidential gifts, TMZ said. The Obama dog will also get a new name.

As the proud guardian to five rescued canine companions, I find this latest news incredibly disheartening given the exposure Obama received during Jana Kohl and Baby's book tour, "A Rare Breed of Love." Right after the election, when Obama said his family's "preference would be to get a shelter dog ... a mutt like me," I was ecstatic. I was one of thousands of supporters who signed an e-card to the Obamas thanking them just for considering a rescue dog. One signer suggested: "Your 'first pet' could become an international spokesdog for adoption!"

At a time when job losses and record foreclosures are forcing more families to surrender their pets, an adopted dog in the White House would be a huge boost for the estimated 6 million dogs and cats taken into shelters each year.

The president has said he must balance his preference for a shelter dog with the need for a dog that won't affect his daughter Malia's allergies. But allergies don't have to be a bar to rescuing an abandoned pup. We all know many dogs are hypoallergenic. Also, rescue groups specialize in abandoned dogs of just about every breed.

Obama's not going to solve the global economic crisis or nuclear proliferation this month. But his example sure could make a difference in the crisis of too many dogs and too few homes. It is my firm belief that going from pound puppy to first pet would mark the fastest rise since a certain first-term U.S. senator got elected president.

Jo Ann's comments:

I'm with Mary. I think it's quite a betrayal for homeless dogs. As Mary said, there are plenty of "breed specific" rescues throughout the United States and their are lots of dogs that are hypoallergenic. Having a rescued shelter dog in the White House would be a tremendous boost for adoptions.

Obamas Get Pup From Texas Breeder

KINSHIP CIRCLE PRIMARY / PERMISSION TO CROSSPOST

NEWSFLASH: Obamas Get Pup From Texas Breeder

We're disappointed that President Obama opted for a Portuguese water dog from a Texas breeder. After many rescue groups lobbied him to make the humane choice, he did the exact opposite...showing support for breeders and ultimately the puppy mill to pet store chain. Moreover, another shelter dog just inched closer to death.

USDA Licensed National Dog Broker Found Guilty

Companion Animal Protection Society’s Undercover Investigation Convicts National Dog Breeder & Broker Kathy Bauck in Minnesota

(Boston, MA)
– An undercover investigation by the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS), the only national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting companion animals from cruelty and inhumane breeding practices in pet shops and puppy mills, is pleased to announce that Kathy Bauck, the owner and operator of Pick of the Litter (aka Puppies on Wheels) in New York Mills, Minnesota, has been found guilty of four misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and torture.

Ms. Bauck was one of the largest national USDA licensed dog brokers, distributing thousands of dogs to pet shops across the country and via the internet. Based on evidence compiled by CAPS, Ms. Bauck was found guilty by a jury for four misdemeanor counts of cruelty and torture at a trial that began on March 18th and ended on March 24th 2009.

While under a cease and desist order from the State Veterinary Board for the practice of veterinary medicine, including doing C-sections on her dogs, Ms. Bauck continued to practice vet medicine, which was documented by her employees. However, the state allowed her to plea bargain for just one charge for the practice of veterinary medicine and dropped the cruelty charge for killing a puppy by bashing it against a pole. While on parole and serving work release, she continued to commit cruelty that was documented by a CAPS undercover investigator. CAPS submitted the investigator’s hidden camera footage, photographs and reports to local authorities. This documentary evidence was the basis of the criminal case against Bauck.

At the time of the investigator’s employment, Ms. Bauck’s facility held 900 adult dogs and approximately 400 puppies. The undercover video shot by the CAPS investigator shows dogs that are sick, wounded, and emaciated. Dogs at her facility commonly became wounded through fights, even some of the small breed dogs.

CAPS has an online pet shop and internet puppy complaint form and over the years has received a number of complaints from consumers who purchased sick puppies that were bred or brokered by Bauck.

Ms. Bauck has been licensed by the USDA since 1983 and despite CAPS investigations since 1997, the USDA has failed to take action. The July 2008 USDA inspection report for Bauck had no violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). CAPS has been investigating the USDA’s failure to enforce the AWA since 1995 and has been lobbying members of Congress for oversight hearings regarding USDA’s lax enforcement of the AWA. CAPS returns to the Capitol in April to meet with USDA officials and members of Congress and will use the Bauck case as evidence of the USDA’s malfeasance.

At 9:18pm on Tuesday March 24, 2009 after reviewing all of the evidence by the CAPS investigator, the jury determined that Ms. Bauck was guilty of four misdemeanor counts. The sentencing hearing will be on April 24, 2009.
